SUMI-CARD pitch options — when 0.5 mm matters
How finer FFC pitches free board space, what 0.5 mm SUMI-CARD implies for connectors, and practical trade-offs for Malaysian electronics builds.

SEPM’s Flat Component materials highlight customer demand for thinner cables and finer pitches, calling out P0.5 SUMI-CARD™ — flexible flat cable at a 0.5 mm pitch. That single number is easy to overlook, yet it often decides whether a compact module keeps a ribbon interface or must jump to rigid-flex or micro-coax.
Why pitch shrinks
Connector vendors and board designers push density relentlessly. At 1.0 mm pitch, twenty conductors already occupy meaningful edge length; at 0.5 mm, the same circuit can occupy roughly half the mating span (all else equal). Smaller pitches also tend to pair with thinner overall cable stacks — helpful inside notebooks, handheld instruments, optical modules, and dense IoT gateways.
Fine pitch is not free. Alignment tolerances tighten, connector costs may rise, and assembly discipline (cleanliness, insertion force, strain relief) becomes more unforgiving.
SUMI-CARD’s role in the decision
SUMI-CARD™ keeps conductors laminated in order, which is exactly what fine-pitch connectors need. Au-plated terminations may appear when contact reliability or corrosion resistance is critical. Shielded constructions help when density and EMI collide — for example scanner signal paths called out on SEPM’s archive.
Engineering trade-offs checklist
- Confirm connector family availability at 0.5 mm before locking the PCB outline.
- Model fold locations carefully; fine ribbons can crease if handled like harness wire.
- Revisit signal integrity for high-edge-rate lines — pitch and length both affect crosstalk.
- Ask SEPM for current drawings; pitch marketing claims change slower than part revisions.
Adjacent options
If 0.5 mm FFC is still too coarse or too fragile for the motion profile, evaluate flexible PCB or specialty jumper leads. SEPM’s jumper lead notes describe round flexible conductors with stainless cores for long bending life — a different geometry for a different mechanical problem.
